New Star Asset Management, which is seeking to finalise a debt-for-equity swap with its bankers which could leave them in 90% control of the stricken fund manager, fell victim to a mix-up with the UK listing Authority yesterday, but the roots of its fund's performance problems go further back, to a house bet which went dramatically wrong over the past 18 months.
